Osteopathy is a gentle, hands-on, non-invasive form of manual therapy that focuses on improving how your whole body works together. Instead of just treating symptoms, the osteopathic manual practitioners are searching for what is the root cause of the symptoms and the miscommunication between the tissues.
The goal is to re-establish balance and coordination between the tissues. Once this is done, the nervous system will be relaxed (the system of communication in the body) and proper blood flow will be restored (your nutrition and waste management highway). Resulting in the body returning to their normal state of health to self-heal and self-regulate itself.
The osteopathic manual practitioner can do this by possessing a deep knowledge of the muscles, bones, joints, nerves, and circulation (arteries, veins and lymphatics). Also, how tissues function both individually and together as a system. The practitioner looks at the body three-dimensionally (above, below, sides, front & back, superficial to deep), considering how mechanical forces — like gravity, posture, and movement — affect how the body’s structures hold their static position and move dynamically. This is combined with the practitioner's highly refined palpatory skills to be able to feel the smallest changes in the tissues, allowing the practitioner to be hyper specific in their assessment and treatment.
These skills are important, but without the Principles Based Classical Osteopathic understanding they would not know how to go about treating these structures in a way that is the most effective and safe for the client. Having the understanding of where the structures are and how they are/are not working, gives the Osteopath the blueprint of the body. It is their Osteopathic Principles based understanding that is able to interpret and devise a strategy unique to the client's "blueprints" in order to bring back the body's natural alignment, the proper flow of fluids and return health to the client in a way that is not aggressive, painful or invasive.
Your initial session will include a review of your health history, what your main concerns are, I will clarify any questions you have about osteopathy and ensure we are on the same page with your expectations from treatment.
Osteopathic treatment uses gentle hands-on techniques to release restrictions in the body that disrupt its natural harmony. By working with all types of tissues, the goal is to restore balance and improve overall function. Because restrictions can create a wide range of symptoms that show up differently in each person, every treatment is tailored to the individual — focusing on the root cause of discomfort and supporting the body’s ability to heal.

However, ensuring that your Practitioner has adequate education and experience can be challenging, since the profession of osteopathic manual practitioners is unregulated in Canada.
This is why our Osteopathic Manual Practitioners are required to have obtained the OSTCAN (Osteopathy Canada Association) Certification. As this is the highest possible standard for all osteopaths in Canada and helps ensure that you get the highest quality of care possible. This statement is reinforced by the fact that those with OSTCAN certification have the greatest scope of insurance provider coverage, as their success rate overall is much higher.
For these reasons are why we recommend seeking out any osteopath with the OSTCAN Certification.
